THE WOMEN FROM HAVANNA

Without any doubt, Cuba faced in the last decade an influx of tourism - a country that after year long isolation, is trying now to preserve its culture and values against the invasive influences.
The colors of the Carabbean, the music, the rum and the cigars -  all aspects, that are related to Cuba, besides its political situation. Together with the author Cornelia von Schelling we intended to look behind the faces of the supposed happiness and the colorful facades of the houses and portray women, who deal with the struggles of daily life with courage and improvisation, facing the economical and social difficulties. From a doctor working in Havanna's suburbs to a prostitute, wo juggles between her clients/suitors and her son, from an afro-cuban priest to a primaballerina of the legendary "Tropicana" -  women, who all have completely distinct living circumstances, dreams and aims. Fourteen very personal lifestories emerged from that project, describing the daily life in Havanna in the year of 2001.
The photoseries is a small selection from the bookproject, that has been published in 2001 by the german publisher Frederking & Thaler.
