BEHIND BARS

Behind Bars is a report about three women incarcerated in the “El Buen Pastor” womens’ prison in Bogotá. The three women have committed offenses that in many ways exemplify current struggles of Columbian society.
Jensy kidnapped a child, Paola attempted to smuggle drugs, and Sandra was a FARC rebel.
The women maintain that their actions were largely triggered their financial plight and despair. They have been behind bars for years, and will remain there for an undetermined amount of time. Together with 800 other prisoners, they live in single and double rooms. They spend time taking computer classes, running a barber shop, and working in a telecommunication store. These activities enable them to at least momentarily forget the feeling of being deprived of their freedom.
